Windows Internet Explorer 7

Windows Internet Explorer 7 was released by Microsoft on October 18, 2006. This announcement is good step forward for standards compliant web design as many, though not all, of the issues that have plagued the aging web browser have been resolved.

Those who have desired to closely follow the World Wide Web Consortium's recommendations for properly structured (XHTML) and styled (CSS) web documents have found rendering inconsistencies between several browsers on various platforms to be a major source of frustration in their work. Internet Explorer 6 has been the subject of much of that frustration, because it has not been updated since it was released 5 years ago. Much has changed in that time, but because Explorer has been the most used browser for several years by virtue of its widespread distribution as the default browser on the Windows operating system, much of the web design community has been either waiting for the update or recommending other browsers, such as FireFox.

It remains to be seen how quickly the new browser will be adopted. However, Microsoft is strongly recommending that all Windows XP users upgrade their browsers. It is widely known that there are serious security problems related to using Explorer. Understandably, Microsoft is calling Explorer 7 a critical update.

The interface has been cleaned up and sites that have been designed for standards compliant browsers are rendering very well in the updated browser. While Explorer has been able to catch up, many prefer other browsers. For Mac users, Explorer is no longer supported, so it is highly recommended that anyone using Explorer on the Mac use other standards compliant browsers, such as Safari or Firefox.
