Symphony 1.7

Twentyone Degrees released Symphony 1.7 back in March. I am posting this quite after the fact. This is yet another significant release, intended primarily to remove the in-browser updates feature in the Symphony admin. While it is sad to see this feature go, the upside is the benefit of freeing up the developers to work on features and bug fixes, rather than on preparing updates for delivery through automatic updates. This is resulting in more features and more frequent development releases. In my mind, this is well worth the trade off for convenience. For example, take a look at what Alistair will be dishing up in the next update, soon to be released.

Installing & Updating

The new installation procedure also removes any dependency on the Symphony Support Server to be able to install. Simply create an account and download the latest installer. For a fresh install, upload all the files to the server, navigate to the install file and follow the instructions. To update, upload all installer files except for the workspace.

Campfire Services

The next step in updating will be updating the Campfire Services to work with the latest version, which is also a manual operation now, rather than an automatic update as before. It just means a little more work with your FTP client, but Campfire Services (CS) are quite easy to install and enable, and the list of CS is growing as more developers are discovering Symphony.
